New to Scrabble Club Play?

Portland’s Scrabble clubs are a great place to enjoy very challenging games and meet new like-minded people. This is a perfect place to come if your friends or family won’t play with you because you are too good.

The short version: just show up. You don’t need to know any special words, bring any equipment, or win any games. Everyone at our clubs was a newcomer once, and we genuinely enjoy welcoming new players.

What to Expect

  • Everyone starts somewhere. Skill levels range from enthusiastic home players to seasoned tournament veterans. You’ll likely face tougher competition than you’re used to at first — that’s normal, and it’s how you improve quickly.
  • You can watch before you play. Feel free to come and observe a session before jumping in. Most people find watching a game or two is all it takes to feel ready.
  • Newcomers get extra time. At timed clubs (Portland Scrabble Club, Lucky Lab Hawthorne, Soku Sushi), newcomers get 5 extra minutes on the clock and free challenges until they get their bearings.
  • Your opponents will be helpful. After a game, experienced players are usually happy to point out high-scoring plays you might have missed, share word tips, or answer questions. Just ask.
  • The dictionary is different from home. Club play uses a specific word list (NWL23 or WOW24 depending on the club — see below). There are thousands of valid words you’ve never seen before. That’s part of the fun of the learning curve.
  • Challenges work differently. In competitive play, if you challenge a word and it’s valid, you lose your turn. Don’t let that stop you — newcomers get free challenges while they learn the ropes.

A Few Words to Learn First

You don’t need to study to show up — but if you want a head start, focus on two-letter words. There are over 100 valid 2-letter words in the club word lists, and knowing them unlocks a huge range of plays. A few favorites that surprise home players: QI, ZA, XI, AA, OE, AE, OX, EX.

Beyond that, Q-without-U words (like QI, QOPH, QANAT) and common 7-letter bingo stems will serve you well as you progress.
